The photography is very good and the story written by Jonathan Daniels is entertaining, but not informative enough . . . News has been received in Tryon of the death in New York of Mattie 'White, well-known colored woman who lived in Tryon for many years. | ARLEDGE AT KIWANIS Elbert H. Arledge was the speaker at Kiwanis Tuesday and he gave an outline of the activi ties of the 172nd Engineers Com bat Battalipn of which he was a member from the time it was ac tivated at Camp Breckinridge, Ky., June 26, 1943, until it re turned to the States in December 1945. The Battalion sailed from New York in August, 1944, spent three weeks in England, arrived at Utah Beach, France, in Septem ber. In four days the Battalion - motored hundreds of miles across France to the front lines where they were under artillery and and mortar fire. The Battalion main tained supply routes, maintained bridges, removed minefields, sealed and destroyed pillboxes. On Oc tober 11th they were in part of stage operations against Aachen, Germany, the first major German city to fall. The 172nd, , were com mended for their spirited showing in destroying 38 enemy pillboxes and capturing 312 prisoners of war. The Battalion moved deep into Germany destroying enemy con struction and building roads, bridges, SiyJ needed construction for American armies in their march thrtmgh Germany. One ma jor assignment being the construc tion of a 1,386 foot Class 40 Float ing Bailey Bridge across the B<hine River in' the vicinity of Rheinberg j and Wesel during the Rhine offen sive. In the meantime they sal vaged much material for future use. The Tryon Tigers will meet the Asheville “B” gridders here Friday at 3:30 at Harmon Field. This is Tryon's initial game.
